Celebrating 30 years of PC-lint

2015-05-11

PC-lint was released in mid April 1985. Now, 30 years later, it is still the leading static analyzer for C and C++. How did this come about?

PC-lint began as an MS-DOS tool to analyze C code. It was written to match function arguments to their parameters in the days before prototypes. It provided the much-needed inter-module checking that compilers still do not offer. In the years since, it has expanded to other languages, system architectures, and grown vastly in functionality.

Here we are in 2015 and although PC-lint has matured considerably through the years, it still supports the error messages and options that were part of the product in 1985. Because our programmers were continually faced with supporting new compilers, new versions of compilers and new operating systems, they realized the importance of downward compatibility to allow for a smooth update experience.

Over the course of time, it has evolved to become a highly flexible system of finding deep bugs and security breaches and is now arguably the most widely used, fully-featured, C and C++ static analyzer on the planet.

New support site

2013-11-12

We recently launched our new support site, support.gimpel.com, which supplements our email support by providing:

  • a searchable knowledge base
  • a technical support contact form
  • a new feedback forum
The knowledge base is a great tool for finding quick answers to your questions and the best part is that it is automatically searched when filling out a contact support form through our site, reducing the number of places you need to look for a solution.
